The Rainbow Abacus is another model developed for elementary and middle school students. It is intended for exploration of basic place value operations in a new context. Students can begin with counting activities and place value representations, progress through addition and subtraction, and continue on to multiplication and division. These developmentally appropriate applications are described in a guide included with each one. 

The Rainbow Abacus is made for heavy use with twelve rows of rainbow sequenced beads on a beechnut frame. It is more solid and places can be represented more easily by distinct colors than a traditional dark beaded abacus.
